Discovering Thulusdhoo Island in the Maldives
As you'd expect from a Maldivian Island, Thulusdhoo is characterised by crystal clear turquoise water, palm lined shores and balmy weather. What makes this island even more special are its world class surf breaks, fantastic snorkelling AND it's possible to have a luxurious getaway without the exuberant luxury price tag!
The Island itself:
Since Maldivian authorities started allowing local island tourism in 2008, Thulusdhoo is the pioneering island to welcome international tourists.
The opening of some Maldivian local islands to tourism has come at a benefit to both tourists and locals alike; presenting a new means of income and business to the local population and giving travellers the opportunity to discover the beautiful Maldives without the price range previously offered by exclusive resort only islands.
Thulusdhoo Island in particular has a bountiful array on offer including world class surf breaks, beautiful marine life and corals, water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking, jet skiing and diving, all possible on this breathtaking palm lined paradise.
The local population on Thulusdhoo are friendly, accomodating and laid back, the island vibes are very much alive on this island and it won't take you long to kick back, relax and slow down into the island rhythm.
The best time to visit Thulusdhoo:
The dry season in the Maldives, coincidently is also the tourism high season and runs from November through to April.
This season is characterised by warm, clear sky summer days and balmy nights. It's the best time of year to visit the Maldives to ensure prime weather, however the bigger crowds also mean higher prices.
Shoulder season (just before and after high season) in the Maldives also offers amazing weather majority of the time, albeit a little less predictable. This would be the best time of year to travel if you're a backpacker or budget traveller as accommodation often offers great discounts to attract tourists during these periods and there are normally plenty of flight deals on offer too.
For surfers, May through until the end of October is your best bet for getting the best wind and swell direction for the surf breaks such as Chickens and Cokes that are both accessible from Thulusdhoo Island.
Getting to Thulusdhoo:
Thulusdhoo Island is one of the most easily accessible local islands in the Maldives, a short 23kms from Male and the international airport and serviced by a multitude of travel options.
For budget savvy travellers, the daily public ferry is your best option, leaving once a day from Male at 14:30 and only setting you back US$5. Once arriving from your flight, take the speed boat across the channel from the airport to Male (US$1) where you will catch the public ferry from.
It's advisable to book a flight arriving before lunch to give yourself enough time to clear immigration and get to Male for the ferry.
There are also twice daily public speed boats operating between Thulusdhoo Island and Male, these cost slightly more at US$30 but only take 25 minutes between the islands.
If you'd prefer the convenience of leaving Male as soon as your flight arrives, most accommodation will offer you a private chartered boat for around US$200 per boat that can carry up to six passengers. These boats are far more luxurious than the public ferry and mean you won't need to wait or stress about missing the public ferry.
